Susanna Kauhanen is Helsinki (Finland) born, raised and trained; graduating from the University of Helsinki as a Medical Doctor then a General Surgeon and subsequently a Plastic Surgeon. She served for many years as a chief Physician at the Department of Plastic Surgery in Helsinki, majoring in breast reconstruction and lymphedema. Teaching the younger constantly high on the priority list. Clinically relevant research- no matter translational or clinical - done through supervision in higher education where results go straight into clinical practice and is her trademark. Recruited to Akademiska Sjukhuset in Uppsala Sweden 4 years ago she joined the Section of Microsurgery as head of Breast Reconstruction and contributed to form the National Center for lymphedema surgery. Now she shares her time between these two academic centers, a 40 min flight apart. “In my career it is nowadays not so much about what I do, but what I can enable younger colleagues to do and learn”.
